Mourning the Gold Bomber

News from the Front....................The Gold Bomber fell in action today. I wish I could tell you that it fought the good fight, went down swinging and took a few of the bastards with him. But alas I cannot. The reality is that he has been impaled on the tree of pain to suffer through all time never having achieved his destiny,Conquering the Jack.
Loosing The bomber typifies Enzo's day really. He never really fired up through out the session managing only one legal Flathead and 2 or 3 undersized Flatheads . Early into the session the managed a savage braid knot in his go to Soft plastic outfit. That left him with only the bait caster and his fall back rod. Put him at a disadvantage from the get go. A very sportsmanlike offer was extended to use my spare rod, however this was declined due to concerns over competition rules & scoring etc by Enzo. The remainder of the session , was a continual struggle for enz, with lost gear, snags, breaking line and Me catching all the fish!!!!!
We hit the Boambee Creek early, 0630hrs at the Lyons road ramp. Knew it was early as I forgot the take the Motor support off the trailer prior to backing it into the water. Stooopid!! The tide was rising so we headed to one of the big snags about halfway between the 2 boat ramps. Was very quiet in these parts, I managed to land an under size flattie in the first hour and a half. So we decided to head downstream to the Jew hole, Where the big tree has fallen in and created a very nice big snag. I was already, sensing that Enz was in for a hard session, after is rod was put out of commission, so decided to let him drive the boat for once.
We hit the Jew hole on the change of the tide, there were plenty of good fish visible however none really seemed interested in , the Bomber, Blade or the plastics we was throwing up into the fallen tree branches. Had a few flashes and the occasional hit on the first past but after about an hour of toil for no result we decide the hiyt the deeper holes and weed beds further upstream.
First drift past the weed beds with a 120mm Bloodworm Wriggler landed me a 40 cm Flathead. Great decision I thought. Enz was still struggling getting caught up in the snags throwing around hard bodies. The wind and tide combined and seemed to cancel each other out so we were able to sit on the same snag and deep hole for quite some time. I was getting big hit on the 120mm bloodworm, with about 6 hook ups and all of the fish spitting it before i could get then to the boat. Was beginning to get realy frustrating until I finally nailed one and landed a 38cm flattie. 2 in the boat. Result!. Enz still wasn't catching any fish so I was not under any pressure.
After yet another snag, enz finally decided to use a plastic and opted for a 80mm Bloodworm wriggler, as mine had proven successful. Within a short time head hooked up on a 38 cm flattie and got one in the boat. However as Enz was getting his flattie in the boat, I hooked up again, but this time it felt different to the way Flathead Usually behave. When we caught site of it , I realised what it was...a Flounder. On a 120mm Bloodworm wriggler. Got it in the boat, it went 25cm (legal) And a new species for SFC. So now I had 3 legal fish in the boat and a new species bonus point as well.
The wind started to pick up, unlike Enzo's mood so we decided to take a quick trip up Newport creek and cruise the weed beds on the dropping tide. Enzhad changed to a Lava Wriggler, so in the name of sport I did the same and we started the "Lava Challenge". My first cast in the larva challenge landed me a 36 cm flattie.. Woo hoo another legal fish . I Caught 3 or four more undersized flatties before Enz landed his first little flattie in the "Lava Challenge". He went on the land 2 more undersized flatties before we decided to head back to towards the ramp for one last chuck about before calling it a day.
We were in site of the ramp with about 15 minutes of fishing time left. I was happily throwing around a 50mm Drop bear for casting practice whilst Enz was working the edges with the gold Bomber. Was a little too shallow for the bomber and I was quite happy to end the session. So I stowed my gear, However Enzo Decided to Troll the Bomber in a vain attempt to get a Jack and Salvage some pride from the session. however within site of the ramp the Gold Bomber went down. We circled back in search but after many passes over the site. The search was called off. A really Crap way for Enz the finish off a crap session for him.
" This has got to be the worst fishing expedition ever" Enzo 25/07/2010 11:25 am
The session ended with Geoff blitzing Enzo 4 to 1 as well as gaining a bonus point for a new species.
Can Enz bounce back now that he is more than to "Jacks" behind in the 2010 SFC?

  1. RIP Gold Bomber ... so many casts, so few fish (only 1 actually)! Finally got that monkey off my back - now time to look for a better bigger Jack lure!

Remember - it's not who wins or loses, it's all about the journey ... crap - who am I kidding!
