Firstly apologies for the late posting.
We had a session on some new water Sunday 22/05/2011. Still brimming with confidence due to the performance of the Snake. (aka new Electric) We headed to the Kalang river at Gentleman's hours on the incoming tide. We had been given a lead that the channel between the two rivers , Kalang & Bellinger, has a haunt of some big flathead.
So we launched at the first of the 2 ramps at Urunga, serious annoyed at the other fisho carelessly setting up on the ramp whilst we arrived. Some people just don't understand. Heading straight to the channel a little downstream we started a slow drift up the channel working the weed beds and drop offs. I was the first to hook up after around 10 mins with a nice 38cm flattie in the boat. On the board early and very happy about that.
Continuing to drift we landed various undersized flathead each as we slowly drifted up the channel. It wasn't until we saw some activity on the far bank that using the stealth of the new electric were we able to land the second species. Tidy little bream of 24 cm to Enz.
Unfortunately we were unable to land anymore legal fish for the session. After completing the drift in the channel we tried our luck in the BIG water of the Bellinger to no avail. Only a couple of small flatheads landed.
We both agreed that we needed to further explore the possibilities of the "Shortcut Channel" definitely on a dropping tide when the mangroves were draining into the numerous drains and drop offs.
So a good session of at least 10 undersize fish was eventually won by Geoff with the only legal fish in the boat.
(I hope I remember that right)
Looking forward to our next session at Urunga on the dropping tide.
... and scores are tied!
