Enzo now leads the comp with a convincing win over young Geoffrey. We hit the water early today (about 6.30am) at Bonville. Weather conditions during the week (minor flooding) and particularly last night (torrential downpour) left us both with sober assessments about the likelihood of any successful fishing in today's session. The boat however had been fixed during the week (culprit was a blown head gasket) and so we were really just keen to get it on the water and see what the 20HP Evinrude could do.It started first pop and hummed along, once out of the 4 knot zone we decided to check out the upper reaches of Pine Creek (while we had a fast boat with motor) - hooned up there, some great snags and fishing spots noted along the way, and also dodged a dead bloated wallaby floating down the creek! Still pretty chilly at that time, and with vines hanging from the trees we looked at each other and thought 'Southern Comfort'country!
Anyway we got to the upper reaches where it forked out ... in close proximity to a renegade cadet camp we took part in when teenagers! Zoomed back down the creek, mucked about briefly at a few snags along the way, but decided to hit the lower estuary where there was more salt water to be had.
Was a slow morning with not too many others on the water (is that telling us something) - Geoff got a couple of small flatties (both undersize), while I kept flicking about - alternating between the shrikecaster and my spinrod - with no luck whatsoever. As we had a working motor, we decided to hightail it to the Big Bend up Bonville Creek to see what was happening - got there in quicktime - stuffed around for a while getting snags etc. Then I caught a 41 cm lizard using my spinrod and a trusty Gulp Turtle Back Worm - this fish of course trumped Geoff's efforts so far - so I was very pleased and my faith in fishing restored!
As it was still very quiet on the water and we were running out of time we headed back downstream and hit the big water just before boatramp and drifted for a bit with the outgoing tide. Geoff was eager to get something to even the scores. I chucked out my worm again and left it trolling along the bottom while I casted around with the baitcaster. After several minutes Geoff brought my attention to my twitching spinrod and I happily brought in a decent whiting (31cm) to solidify my win for the day.
2 points to Enzo ... no points for Geoff - Enzo now winning 3 to 2.
Wooooh boys, so now it is heating up. I like your scoring system. A good day can really take you up there.
ReplyDeleteSo now you are running around in a boat - what happens when is sold? ha ha
Nice work guys.
The boys went out on sunday and smashed the squire. They got 30 fish for the morning, about 20 legal, 6 straightened hooks and 4 bust-offs. When are you guys coming up?
hmmmm, in most competitions it is illegal to leave a rod unattended, and any fish caught in such a manner are not able to be submitted as part of the competition. Trolling etc is not permitted, and the angler must be actively putting action in the lure. Seems a bit of a suspect win to me. U guys have any rules or regulations on this....or can you just have 20 rods out the back and simply drive around until you snag something? hee hee
ReplyDeleteRe: the boat possibly being sold - let's not talk of this!
ReplyDeleteRe: the catch via unattended trolling - well as it is currently allowed (well, it's not disallowed) I consider it to be a competition point won fair & square! Not sure about what you are proposing as it doesn't really fit in with our local rafferty's rules here ... we're just simple fisherfolk! However, an extraordinary meeting may need to be called to review our tournament rules? The fact remains I still lead 3:2!
