Anzac Day 2009

Well after nearly a month off the water due to bad weather we were finally able to start fishing again. Although the creeks have not fully recovered from the flood of 31/03 , The big Flood has had a major impact on the estuaries around Coffs, in particular the mouth of bonville creek has had some major changes. (I am sure Enz will post a couple of pictures)The impact of all the flood water was still evident in the Tea tree colour of the water. We were both not overly optimistic with the prospects of catching loads of fish.

We headed down a couple of hours off low tide hoping to get amongst it on the tide change. We had both acquired new rods and reels (Thanks Snaggles) so were keen to try out our new gear. There had also been purchases of new hard body lures and large soft plastics, as there is rumour the Jewfish are liking the new creek mouth conditions created by the flood. If Enzo starts to brings anymore rods we are going to need a bigger boat!

As to the fishing , well, it was very uneventful. Very little interest in any plastics or hard bodies we had at our disposal. It took just over 3 hours for the first, and only, fish to be landed. Happy to report that the 32 cm Flathead liked the look of the 100mm bloodworm wriggler on the end of my line.

Worth noting that we ventured right to the mouth of Bonville creek. We had a clear run to the Pacific Ocean, but decided that the bar crossing in a 3 m swell was just a little to perilous. However it has got us thinking of the possibilities of the breaking free from the enclosed waters of the creeks and rivers and heading out into the "Deep Blue"

So yet again Enzo heads home with a doughnut his 5th for the year . But after a count back I realise that I have only caught 1 legal fish all year. Takes the gloss off the session win but hey a win is a win!!! I think we are definitely overdue a change of fortune soon or we will have to seek expert advice on why we are not catching any decent fish.
