We went back to Urunga last Sunday to explore the potential of the Kalang/Bellinger Rivers further. A relatively early start, getting on the water just after 7am ... very chilly also. High tide was just before 6am, so on a dropping tide + very pleasant winter conditions - full sun and no wind!
We were each sporting new secret weapons; Geoff had some ridiculous looking hand-tied fly (courtesy of Snaggles ... which achieved no results), while I had replaced the line on my baitcaster with new Fireline Exceed 'Tournament Grade' (8.8 lb rated) loaded with a 100mm Bloodworm wriggler.
My weapon choice would prove to be a winner ...
We went down the channel first, VERY quiet ... from memory we picked up a couple of flatties (Geoff was first to get one in the boat) and a small bream for Geoff.
We then headed over to a bank with some structure and did some drifts on it - very sucessful - very nice flattie for me (44cm) + legal bream (all on the 100mm Bloodworm/baitcaster combo). We then headed up to the oyster leases around the island - leases were very quiet but the rocky bank proved fruitful ... at least for me! Some more flatties and a small bream. In the meanwhile Geoff was attempting to produce every tackle challenge in the book! (knotted line, disappearing jigheads, tangles galore, etc.)
Nearly midday and the tide had finally started to turn. Found an eddy around a rockwall further downstream on the incoming - spotted a number of fish darting about so we had a go there. Geoff was first to hook up, bringing in a very nice Luderick (point for new species), he was happy about this as the score at that stage was 4:1 ... this brought him closer with 4:3. Luckily for me I then nabbed a Tailor (one of a school we spotted roaming about) ... also a new tournament species - so 2 points for me.We persisted for a while longer then headed further down the wall finding a break into a small 'lagoon' type section - not much action but fun navigating the gap in the rocks!
Headed across to the Kalang and drifted down the wall for a while, then crossed to the other side and struck some activity on the other rock wall.
Score at end of session (around 3pm) ended up 6:4 my way. Very enjoyable session!
Me: 2 Flatties + 2 Bream + 1 Tailor = 6 points
Geoffro: 1 Flattie + 1 Bream (32cm) + 1 Luderick = 4 points

Fishing in stereo doubles your chances!
