Boambee CSI ... 'Sunday slaughter'

Geoff and I finally got back on the water last Sunday after of few weekends of disruptions and distractions! Geoff was particularly keen as he really needed the chance to gain back valuable points as the 2011 tournament is nearly at an end. I should have been slashing my backyard to keep Chelle happy, however did the honourable thing and gave Geoffro his chance!

We ventured to Boambee knowing there would probably be a bit of wind about and so it had a few more sheltered sections to choose from. A start time of 9.30am was selected so as to get on the water with time to get down the bottom end and work the incoming tide. This also allowed me a leisurely breakfast at Urban with Chelle and valuable domestic brownie points.

Met Geoff at the boatramp and he'd already picked up a couple of undersize flatties.

I finally handed over three crisp $50 notes to my fishing buddy - my share of the new battery for the electric and associated cables, etc. Of course I suggested it was a bribe for Geoff to bring his 'B game' to the session ... a couple of laughs, but the amateur psychology behind this strategy was to pay dividends later ;-)

We chucked around for a little while near the boat ramp on a still outgoing tide/drift ... nothing! We hoped the recent wet weather wasn't going to play havoc with our plans for fish (and points).

So we changed tack, and motored down to the very bottom of the creek, flicking around the railway bridge and slowly drifting towards the mouth.

I noticed a big flash of silver near the rocks, so cast my Bloodworm wriggle over to it. BANG .. I was on and my drag was making lots of noise, the fish darted all over, and I quickly wound up the drag - not too tight as this was my light spinrod, with 4lb fireline and 6lb FC leader! It fought some more and we were both very excited ... until SNAP! %#@*!!! Bastard busted me off ... or cut me off on the rocks. Missed out on what must have been a significantly sized Trevally.

The tide finally started to turn and we moved a bit further up the creek to fish the weed bed banks and sand holes. This is where I picked up a couple of legal flatties, Geoff getting a couple of undersize ones in return.

One of the flatties was a very decent size. Geoff openly admits to saying (ie he's on the record) "should go 44 cm or more" - this is an important point, as this fish proved to be a very slippery escape artist! After landing it in the boat and removing the hook, I picked it up with a towel (a couple of times as he wriggled out of it), then as I was putting him down on the Fisheries sticker to measure him (stuck to the rear of the boat), the bugger did another big wriggle, launching itself straight out of my hands and to freedom over the side - lucky for him, as he would have been barbecued a few hours later! Geoff tried to contest this catch as it wasn't "officially" measured, however he knows his personal integrity is on the line as blind Freddy could see it was it was 40+cm! Also, there is nothing in the rules about what the 'official' measuring system is [enough said]!

As we drifted near the Jew hole, I picked up a legal Bream - now 3 points to nil, and oh so happy!

We then spotted something red and large under the water near the distant bank. We investigated and found a Kia Sportage wagon! First thoughts were some idiots had stolen it and dumped it in the creek and then, as we couldn't see into the car, wondered if it might be more sinister? Geoff phoned the local cop shop and reported it - not sure what came of it?

We flicked around this area for sometime but was very quiet and the wind was picking up some more. So we started heading back to the top boat ramp, stopping at our usual spots along the way - very very quiet ... very very tedious!

Just as we were nearing the boat ramp, I was 'on' ... reeled it in to find that I'd jagged the 'scourge of the estuaries' - a mullet (37cm specimen). Yeehaa - Another point to end the session for me.

Geoff ... not so happy, or in his words "every dog has its day" (he he he).

Session results:
Geoffro ... ZERO points
Enzo ... 4 points 5 points (sweet victory) ... thanks Chris for pointing out that the mullet gets a bonus point for being the largest of its species caught so far in the tournament :-)

It's looking like a difficult challenge for Geoff to recover from, if he is to retain his SFC title!
