The years first Doughnut

We decided on a late Sunday Morning session on Boambee on the top of the tide, and for the first time in recorded history Enzo was actually early. We launched at the Sawtell road boat ramp at 1100 heading down river.

I was the first to have success with an undersized flattie landed with my new favourite weapon , the nuclear chicken grub. The nuclear chicken produced another result quickly after with a 38cm flattie landed. 1-0 to Geoff.

We continued to drift with the tide as it has now turned and was on the way out. Having little success or interest we head towards the mouth of the river to avoid the ever increasing wind. We drifted with the incoming tide with very little interest until we reached the junction of boambee & Newport Creeks.

There were plenty of stingrays on the sand flat and i managed to bounce my 100mm bloodworm wriggler into one and jag him. It was a good sized Stingray and using my 4lb braid the certainly gave a good fight. Enz was able to have a couple of cracks at him with the net but the ray was having none of it and would run back into the deeper water once it saw the net.

I decided to attempt to land the ray by dragging it up onto the sand flat, so got out of the boat and within a few seconds of trying to drag the ray out of his deep hole I saw snapped off.

"What ever you do do not get off the boat'

We continued on up Newport's Creek, with very little interest, except Enz being snapped off by a sizable fish and me landing another undersized Flathead. Then I was hammered by a good fish which turned out to be a very nice 41cm Trevalley. 2-0 Geoff.

With enzo's enthusiasm waning due to his lack of fish we headed back towards the boat ramp to end the session. It was here that Enz finally got a hook up after around 4 hours of reward less effort, only to have the undersize Flathead spit the lure out within an arms length of the boat.

So the session ended with a very convincing victory to Geoff 2-0 and Enz recording the first true donut (no fish at all for the session) of the 2012 championship. Geoff now holds a healthy 4 point lead of the struggling SFC champ.
