The slow drift out proved to be unsuccessful however as the tide changed we were both hopeful of better results. The drift on the incoming tide produced no success. However the highlight was the spotting of a very healthy 60+ cm Flathead. It left an unmistakable indentation in the sand as we drifted over it. There is hope yet we both thought.
We continued to drift upstream along Newport creek with absolutely no success. Just the odd bit interest here and there, but no hook ups. 3 solid hours on the water and both of us facing doughnuts. After the demise of the shrike caster with the mother of all birds nest we decided to motor up Newport creek to the link road bridge to take advantage of having a boat at our disposal.
After a short time spent fishing the very murky waters of upper Newport Creek the decision to flee the traffic noise was easily agreed to and we headed back down to a spot known locally as the "Jew Hole" . There wee loads of very good looking fishs around the weed beds on the drift down, however none of them seemed interested in any size, style or type of soft plastics we would throw at them.
Time was getting short, we had been on the water for over 4 hours with absolutely nothing. We decided to give the drift one more try. Finally I landed a 39 cm dusky with an evil minnow fish. Success at last. That was the nail in Enzo's coffin , after over 4 hours of endevour he finally had to admit defeat.
So Geoff was the winner of the session with the only legal fish caught for the day. Enzo once again headed home with a Doughnut! Hmmmmm Doughnuts. Scores now tied at 3 all
Thoughts are now turning to a session on Moonee creek, the spiritual home of "The Jack"
Until next time
May it be big, dusky and on the end of your line
Sounds like hard work, guys. Good going on the persistence - it can pay off.... even if it is just one of you....hmmm, based on your rules if this was the end of the year, then Enzo would win with the most legal fish caught. Keep posting. This is fun.
ReplyDeleteWe're planning for a paddle up Moonee tomorrow morning hunting Jack ... here's hoping for a turn of luck!
