Well we went 'old school' for yesterday's session, dusting off the old canoe and going for a paddle on Coffs Ck hoping for some easy lizards along 'flathead alley'. Gentleman's hours ... we put in up-creek near Jonathon Close after lunch on a dropping tide. Nice and sunny although a bit of wind about.
We headed for the 'reef' behind the showground and although there seemed to be a bit of movement about - no luck. However we did bump into a couple on a kayak who were good friends through army who I haven't seen for ages and who had moved back to Coffs ... so had a good yarn on the water.
After that little break we got back to business, assisted by Boags Draught in the front seat and Tooheys New in the back seat. Thank God for the cold brews as the fishing was shite. I picked up the first catch - an undersize bream on a 80mm Wasabi wriggler.
We drifted downstream and I finally picked up another fish - a tiny flattie. Geoffro was getting concerned at this point, believing he'd left his fishing mojo behind! However after a couple of hours on the water and a few different Squidgy species, he changed to a trusty Lava and for his next 3 casts picked up 3 very small flatties!
We kept drifting downstream and even the 'Aquarium' at the Promenade failed to produce anything! Geoff then picked up a small Trevally and I got a couple of other small flatties and so despite persisting to last light we each only caught 4 undersize fish!
Here's hoping for a better result next time! I reckon we'll get back in the boat next time also, forgot how awkward the canoe can be and how sore you butt gets sitting in the thing for several hours!
